BACK HAUL SERVICES
Next to Page Arizona lies Glen Canyon Dam, which holds back the water creating Lake Powell. Below the dam, the remaining 15 mile section of Glen Canyon can be explored by floating down the beautiful flat water of the Colorado River in between walls more than a thousand feet tall. See Map. Access for kayakers to this stretch of rive is at Lees Ferry, AZ where you must make reservations with Colorado River Discovery for a Back Haul from the ferry. Please read the National Park Service "Things to Know Before You Go" Brochure.”
About Colorado River Discovery Backhauling Services
Colorado River Discovery provides backhauling services from Lees Ferry upriver to just south of Glen Canyon Dam for paddle craft like kayaks, canoes, and personal rafts. You will meet a CRD raft at the Lees Ferry dock and be shuttled upstream to your desired location. After being dropped off at a beach, you can enjoy a self guided trip back down to Lees Ferry and your vehicle. Paddling from the Dam back down to Lees Ferry can be done in approximately 6 hours. You may also consider extending your stay in Glen Canyon by camping overnight at the 6 designated campgrounds along the river. Campgrounds are first come, first served and all have self-composting toilets and fire pits. Wood collecting is not permitted.
There is no camping fee or permit required to camp on the river. However, entrance fees apply; a 1-7 Day Vehicle Pass is $15 or a 1-7 Day Individual Permit is $7 per person. These fees can be paid at the automated fee machine at the entrance to Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. You may camp at one location for up to 14 days at a time.
The water flows at a varied rate, depending on water releases from the Glen Canyon Dam. Check with the Bureau of Reclamation for the day's outflow at (928) 645-3978. Weather in canyon country can change at a moment’s notice. Be prepared. Dress for the season (up to 105ºF in summer; down to 45ºF in the spring and fall). The canyon gets wind in the spring and monsoon conditions in the summer.
