The kayak touring possibilities on Lake Powell are
virtually limitless. With 170 miles of water and 1900 miles of shoreline it is
possible there are places a kayak has never been. Certainly we at Hidden Canyon
have not paddled every inch of the Lake. Many kayakers who paddle Lake Powell
independently keep to the main channel and paddle Marina to Marina. While we
admire their tenacity we feel the real value of Lake Powell as a touring
destination lies in its relatively unvisited side canyons. Although no longer a
river, Glen Canyon's much lauded 94 side canyons still exist and today's lake
makes them accessible to touring kayaks. Almost every canyon has a hiking
opportunity offering incredible narrows and photography. Many are inaccessible
to motor craft.
Lake
Powell, like so many Park Service Resources, has two faces; The popular wide
bays with water skiers, jet skis and houseboats and the quiet narrow backwaters
and canyons. Add the time of year into the equation and our favorite kayak
places between Labor Day and Memorial Day can seem like a virtual wilderness.
Knowing which places to avoid and when to go only solves part of the secret to
exploring Glen Canyon. Hidden Canyon Kayak provides the complete answer by
quickly getting you up lake to the most fascinating areas and then guiding you
past the often confusing shoreline into the hidden recesses of the most
exciting canyons.
LABYRINTH FACE, AND WEST CANYONS This is the area where
we first recognized the potential of Lake Powell as a classic touring
destination. As a tour it has everything. Wide open beaches and shallows for
instruction and practices, concealed narrows to paddle and hike, an arch, ruins
and a forgiving shoreline that allows us to land frequently. All this just 15
miles from Wahweap Marina, far enough to be away from the main traffic lanes
but near enough to access quickly and maximize our time on the lake. While any
sea kayaker would enjoy this itinerary of blue water and soaring cliffs, we can
especially recommend it for those who have never kayaked before, those who
would prefer to paddle shorter distances or those who just feel like being
lazy. This tour lends itself to an emphasis on instruction for beginners and
intermediates. West Canyon our final destination provides a spectacular hike at
its very end. *Please note: We will conduct the 4-day trips on a
charter basis only for a minimum of of 6 people. Please call for details and
further information. 4-DAY TRIP $760 Trips Leave every Sunday/Monday
March, April, September, October, and November
RAINBOW CANYONS
Forty
miles up lake from Wahweap Marina the wide bays of Lake Powell are replaced by
a narrow main channel bounded on the north by Fifty Mile Mountain (7500') and
on the south by Navajo Mountain rising to over 10,300 feet. The fifteen miles
of lake between Dangling Rope Marina and the San Juan Arm contains the
entrances to a dozen spectacular canyons providing kayakers with some of the
finest narrows to paddle and hike on Lake Powell. Ruins, miners and moki steps
and the grand daddy of arches, Rainbow Bridge round out this tour. Camping
close by allows us to paddle and view Rainbow Bridge before the motor traffic
arrives at this justifiably popular attraction. Camps in this area tend to be
smaller and less commonplace but without exception the settings are
spectacular. Enthusiastic beginners and previous paddlers will be best served
by this tour. 5-DAY TRIP $875 6-DAY TRIP $950 Trips Leave every
Sunday/Monday March, April, September, October, and November
ESCALANTE EXPLORER The Escalante Arm of Lake Powell and
its long side canyons provide us with our most remote and rugged paddling
destinations. These six day expeditions encompass kayaking and hiking in equal
measure. Spectacular arches and ancestral Puebloan sites define this tour.
Previous paddlers with plenty of camping experience are most likely to
appreciate the trip. 6-DAY TRIP $1,000 Call regarding this itinerary
during low water.
CUSTOM TRIPS The preceding represents our three
favorite itineraries on Lake Powell. An infinite amount of alternatives exist
and we would be happy to design a custom trip with your group. Longer trips can
be made by combining the latter two tours and excellent opportunities for
exploration are available in the San Juan Arm. For a true wilderness experience
the months of December and January will allow you to have this immense Lake
almost to yourself. If you wish to charter a trip please feel free to contact
us.
